Vigil two took place in the Undercroft at the Castle. The objective of this vigil was to try and make contact with any spirits present, either by the use of a Pendulum or by getting the spirit to move a glass to and from a candle.

The idea was that the group member would ask the spirit a series of Yes or No questions and depending on how the spirit caused the pendulum to swing determined the correct answer.

To begin with, the vigil member had to ask a control question to determine which direction was Yes and which No.

Similarly the glass movement toward or away from the candle was used to determine the answer to a set of questions. So they may ask the spirit to move the upturned glass toward the candle if they were male. The group members were asked to place there fingers lightly on the glass and not apply any pressure. Any spirit present would use their energy to move the glass.

Certain members of the group seemed to have success with the pendulum and determined that there was a female spirit present. Another group used the glass and candle method to determine a male spirit, a soldier from the 11th Century, was present.

Interestingly, at one stage during the vigil one group actual got the glass to tip over completely. They were adamant that they had their fingers placed gently on the glass and did not force it over.

One friend I was attending the ghost hunt with stated that the glass she was experimenting with tipped toward her and she swore that she had applied no pressure to the glass. For the glass to have moved in this way, she would have had to have done this.

My personal experiences of this vigil were not great. When we tried to get the upturned glass to move we experienced only a very slight movement in answer to our questions. However, the friend I was with was being quite forceful with his requests for movement and if I had been a spirit, I would have ignored him too!!

My take on what happened in this vigil is still quite sceptical. I think that subconsciously group members could have been moving the glass with their fingers and that there need to have the glass move could have taken over.

In the next post, I will detail the group séance which we held in the Undercoft and finally something that made me sit up and think a little.
